Celebrating language, accelerating literacy, inspiring teachers.

Nellie Edge seminars and online resources provide models of meaning-centered instruction within a joyful community of learners — skillfully connecting research, wisdom of practice, and multisensory strategies that build writing and reading independence and foster lifelong love of learning.

A special mahalo (thank you) to our amazing friend, gifted writer and design artist Jennifer Morrow of Creative Company. She shared our vision of creating schools worthy of our children and poured her heart into this website: shaping the words, the design, and the way everything fits together, so teachers and families can quickly find what makes a difference for their early learners.

This work — grounded in neuroscience, action-research, and decades of classroom practice — has inspired thousands of educators to reimagine what literacy instruction can look and feel like.

Created in partnership with Master Kindergarten teachers. Grounded in how the brain learns best.

The curriculum and programs developed through Nellie Edge Resources are not the work of one person in isolation. They are the product of sustained collaboration — with Master Kindergarten teachers, Dr. Pat Wolfe, and literacy experts — created and tested over three decades in real kindergarten classrooms.

Workshops and online seminars have been presented by outstanding teacher-researchers committed to integrating current research with state-of-the-art literacy practices. The guiding question in every professional development experience is the same one great teachers ask themselves every day: How can I do an even better job reaching every child?

Collaborative, action-research with documented outcomes.

Action-research teams working alongside Nellie Edge documented how joyful writing-to-read strategies within a comprehensive literacy framework accelerate literacy and produce unexpectedly high outcomes.

These results — gathered in real classrooms, with real children — form the evidence base behind every program and resource.

The SMILE Framework

The S.M.I.L.E. approach —

  • Systematic (scaffolded)

  • Meaningful (multisensory)

  • Integrated (intentional)

  • Language and Literacy

  • Experiences

It is joyful, rigorous, and developmentally appropriate, designed to engage the heart while taking full advantage of how a young child's brain learns best.

This framework was developed through sustained collaboration with Master teachers and refined through years of action-research.

It is not a formula — it is a set of living principles, tested and continuously improved in partnership with the teachers who use them.

The Nellie Edge Story

She followed the children’s joy — and it led her somewhere remarkable

Nellie Edge began her teaching life in a bilingual kindergarten classroom in Albuquerque, New Mexico, working with children who spoke Spanish at home and were learning to speak, write and read in English — children who needed something more than traditional lessons to help them cross the bridge into literacy.

What she found was song. Traditional Spanish and English folk songs, sung and dramatized together in the classroom, did something extraordinary. Children who struggled to hold onto words on a page could sing them effortlessly. Vocabulary that slipped past them in traditional lessons became unforgettable in melody and movement. Their oral language blossomed. Their writing and reading followed.

That discovery — that language and music are deeply intertwined, and that a child who can sing a word already owns it in a powerful, lasting way — became the seed of everything Nellie has built since.

She began to ask a question that would shape her entire career: What if learning to speak, write and read could feel like this — joyful, musical, full of meaning — for every child?

Her mission to help every child step into writing and reading with joy, rhythm, and meaning inspired the creation of dozens of kindergarten resource books, guides and live and online seminars. Her deep commitment to children—and to the teachers who guide them—shines through in her beautifully curated resources and her collection of trusted professional resources.
