In January 2008, Julie Lay studied with Eileen Feldgus, the co-author of Kid Writing: A Systematic Approach to Phonics, Journals and Writing Workshop. We encourage you to read this award-winning and well-loved book! Eileen Feldgus has updated the workshop model from the original writing workshop with more intentional modeling to accelerate progress from “kid writing” to independent writing in kindergarten.

In the first segment of this “planned demonstration,” Julie models the format of the beginning “Kid Writing” lesson. The goal is to help children see themselves as writers. Children already know how to make wavy lines, zigzags, and “magic lines…”
