Make Optimal Use of Reading Buddies: The practice of having older reading buddies regularly come into the classroom to pair up with a kindergartner for book sharing is a very widely used social/literacy activity that children enjoy. We can optimize this reading time and still keep it joyful by training the older buddies and giving them written guidelines in how to intentionally support their reader and what specific books and materials to use. Older buddies need modeling and practice in how to sit elbow-to-elbow and knee-to-knee and help the reader track words. Teach them how to use the Neurological Impress Method of Supported Oral Reading. This is an especially helpful technique to use with our poetry “I Can Read” notebooks and predictable take-home Little Books. Repeated practice builds reading fluencyIn one kindergarten classroom, older reading buddies volunteer to give up their morning recess for eight weeks in a row to tutor their younger student. Each pair of buddies has a reading folder with their names on it, and a written schedule of what to read, and the skill games to play each day of the week. This allows the volunteer reading buddy to provide powerful one-on-one help – especially for our less-experienced readers. It also develops wonderful, caring friendships within the school family. (Buddies look out for each other!) When “buddy reading” time is more loosely organized, the social benefits and focus on a love of books are still valuable. However, when teachers provide the “Just Right: I Can Read” book for each learner, appropriate reading support and systematic word work, this block of time becomes another powerful support for our emergent readers and it can accelerate the reading development for all of our children.
