Rocks: Children’s Fascination With the Natural World Outside the Classroom Create Reasons to Read and Write

Our study of rocks created compelling reasons for children to want to read and research; draw and write.

Children also draw and write to culminate studies about trees, stars, birds, animals, and insects.

We begin by learning about the layers of the earth and constructing a clay model using plastocene (an oil-based clay).

“Maybe I’ll be a geologist some day.”

Study includes:

  • Digging for fossils (Some rocks have all the fossils from thousands of years of layering.)
  • Learning about rocks and crystals
  • Growing crystals
  • Collecting rocks
  • Exploring the properties of rocks
  • Recording information in
